Recollections of Edith
Spindel
- When Hascal went to Asia
Minor (that's what it was called then), he took Max. Max was a "holy
terror" and they thought it was agood idea to take him. Once at a
seder, he leaned a bench against the door. When the door was
opened to let Elijah in, the bench came crashing in to the room.
- You notice how Rae and Sarah
are wearing the same dress in the photos. That's because two dresses
could be cut with the pattern from the material.
- When the girls learned
English, they read Ivanhoe. It was their favorite book. That's why
Helen's middle name is Rowena.
- Zeyde lived with us because mom kept a kosher house. He used to enjoy helping
dad with the takings from the wholesale candy business. Dad would put all
the change on the table and Zeyde would count and put the coins in rolls.
And then the best part, was walking hand in hand with zeyde to the bank.
- Zeyde died in shul. He was a very learned man, and had been called to the
lead the prayer. He hadn't felt well that day, but he went anyway. Zeyde died
as the Torah was brought out.
- We loved to sleep on Sarah
and Nathan's porch on 17th street. We'd listen to the player piano.
Sarah and Nathan's song was "Oh, you beautiful doll..".
- The sisters were very close,
to the point that they didn't need anyone else. The cousins were very
close, too. On the 4th of July (this is during the depression), we'd
all
go to Glen Echo Park. It was only about 5 miles away, but we used to
get so excited, and thought it was the greatest thing.
- My parents and all the aunts
and uncles loved to play cards. They used to joke that it was a good
thing they were all going to be in the cemetary together, because they
would still be able to play cards.
